This Page contains Links to Formal Complaints KAALE are now initiating the process of making documented formal complaints to the Uk government / Ministry responsible for live animal exports. Complaints will be made in writing and relate to any special (animal) welfare problems that are observed by KAALE monitors at Ramsgate port during each and every export consignment.
It is the intention to give a very brief overview of all complaints made within this website.
Any KAALE formal complaints are being documented and submitted to Defra, Animal Health, various Members of the Uk Parliament (MP’s), as well as to Members of the European Parliament (MEP’s) for the South East of England, this being where Ramsgate harbour is located.

Where applicable; references to specific KAALE Reports (ie. J32, J33, J34 etc which can all be viewed on this site) associated with any of the harbour incidents will be included within the formal complaint. Photographs will be included as necessary to support the complaint, along with documented evidence of all telephone conversations made at the time (of the incident) between KAALE representatives and Animal Health personnel in Ramsgate harbour.
When necessary, subsequent KAALE reports will include details of the official complaint(s) made. Any report will identify that a formal complaint associated with a specific incident on a specific date has been made. For example, KAALE report J45 may provide details that refer to incidents observed and noted in the original KAALE report J43. J45 (for example) will outline that an official complaint has now been independently made relating to an observed incident detailed originally in report J43.
KAALE are requesting a written response associated with the complaint from the ministry (Defra) of approximately one month. If this does not happen, then a KAALE produced sample letter will be put onto this website, asking supporters to e mail Defra ministers and Animal Health departments throughout the Uk about any specific formal complaint issue which has not been resolved. E mails associated with this formal complaint will continue to be sent to government departments until a formal written response is supplied by the ministry to KAALE. If the ministry response is not considered to be adequate regarding their follow up actions, then KAALE e mail sample letters will continue to be sent indefinitely. If the ministry response is considered to be adequate regarding their actions to be taken; the KAALE produced sample (campaign) letter will be removed from this site.
Copies of each formal complaint letter will also be supplied to the EU Legal Affairs department in Brussels at the time of original production; and any follow-up responses from Defra / Animal Health, including any resulting actions proposed, will also be copied to the EU. The EU will be kept informed of Defra / Animal Health progress associated with all KAALE formal complaints.
Our intention with these complaints is to formally identify to the Uk Competent Authorities any specific concerns which we have regarding live animal exports from the port of Ramsgate. As we have stated, copies of the complaints will also be provided to the EU legal team and the EU Food and Veterinary Office (FVO). The EU will be kept fully informed of each complaint and its progression, in order that they can take action against the Uk competent authorities if necessary via the FVO.
Formal Complaint 1 Formal Complaint 2 Formal Complaint 3 Formal Complaint 4 KAALE have now been provided with a response by Defra to Formal Complaint Reference: KAALE / 001 / 7 Dec / 2011. We do not find the response is sufficient regarding our concerns over the use of the ‘box wagon’ trailer for live animal exports from the Uk.
A copy of the Defra letter from Mr. Adam Broderick (Defra Customer Contact Unit) can be seen below.
